Different Types and Alternate Uses Of Earplugs

Earplug is designed to protect your ears from noise pollution, water, dust, excessive wind and foreign bodies. For centuries, earplugs for sleeping have been used. Cotton or fabric was inserted in the ears to block the surrounding noise.

Today, hearing protection has immensely evolved and it can block mostly all types of disturbing vibration and noise.

Four kinds of earplugs

1. Foam earplugs - Memory foam is compressed and it expands when you insert it within your ear canal

2. Flanged earplugs - Damping or absorbing material is used for protection against Hi-Fi sounds

3. Silicone earplugs - Carefully, roll it into the shape of a rod and mould to fit on the external part of the ear canal

4. Custom moulded earplugs - Designed specially to fit the users ears

Today, earplugs are available for sleeping, swimming, musicians, flight travellers, etc. An earplug helps to prevent ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hearing loss amongst other complaints.

Alternate uses of earplugs

For industrial workers - Industrial workers working within audible range of ear-splitting machines for long periods need protection earplugs.

For soldiers - The British MoD (Ministry of Defence) recommends their soldiers to use plugs, while firing weapons.

For musicians - Artists and technicians in music studio are surrounded by loud nature music especially rock music. They often wear earplugs to protect their hearing from being damaged due to their performances. Musician’s earplugs are intended to tone down sounds equally across audio band minimizing the effect of treble and bass levels.

For skiers and motorcyclists - Custom moulded earpieces are designed in a way that different attenuator capsules having different levels (basically 9, 15 & 25 dB) can be inserted. Motorcyclists and skiers select decibel reduction hearing plugs to balance the ongoing wind noise against their helmet or head.

For flight - Airplane cabin pressure fluctuation during take-offs and landing causes pain in the ear. Flight passengers can protect their ears with foam earplugs and comfortably decrease exposure to aircraft noise during flight. Thus, passengers can sleep comfortably during air travel.

For quality sleep - Earplugs for sleeping have been designed to block external sound that possibly prevents your sleep. To find out if the earplug you purchased for sleeping is comfortable or not it is vital to try them first.

The pressure on your ear positioned between the pillow and head can cause considerable discomfort. Lie down and tilt your head to the sides or back. This may cause anatomical changes in ear canal diameter causing it to reduce. This can lessen comfort level, if earplugs are too large.

For swimmers - While swimming, it is necessary to keep the water out, so that it does not get into your inner ear. This can cause swimmers ears. Lab custom moulded earplugs are recommended because these plugs are not introduced into the ear canal.

For surfing - Adults enjoying high-wind water sports need to select earplugs cautiously. Surfing earplugs must have low NRR to hear the sounds around you. They must fit properly to keep wind and cold water out from the ear, thus preventing surfer’s ear.

A small product has so much alternative uses. It saves users from hearing disabilities due to noise and water. Moreover helps you to get peaceful sleep and even focus when needed. They are portable and can be carried in your purse or pocket.
